Ever thought of traveling the world with your family? This (crazy?) family actually did it. How they even got the courage to start on this wild 85-city adventure will inspire you.
Come along on this most amazing adventure, as we travel around the world in 270 days. With John White and Jody Temple-White. Of www.TheCourageVibe.com
Jody and John are adventurers, speakers, travel strategists and volunteers who help people worldwide with travel. They speak to families like yours and mine on how we too, can make a similar leap and travel the world.
Years ago, Jody met a woman on a place who talked about how she took her preteens around the world. Jody was mesmerized, talked to John and they knew they had to do it as well. She says the “stars aligned” in 2012, and they jumped in and booked one-way tickets to Australia. Along with their two children, Riley and Allison, they visited 6 continents, 24 countries and 85 cities over a 9-month span.
“We’ve been called crazy many times” (Jody)
“It was a high-adventure, low-budget trip” (John)
How can other families do this?
School – kids did online, self-study while away
“In reality, their learning was from the road; visiting temples, being out in the Sahara Desert, checking out the starts. Learning from the other people travelling, that’s where their greatest growth came from” (Jody)
Vaccinations – “tricky”, as they didn’t know all the countries they’d be in when they originally booked the trip.
“Our family takes an optimistic, not naïve, approach. The answers will come to us when we’re ready” (Jody)
Finances – Their budget was $50/person/day (not including transportation). For 9 months, the total spent was $72,000 ($2,000/person/month).
All four of the family members had different roles, but are all adventurers at heart
“We’re the family that is always trying new things on a regular basis” (Jody)
Jody says they wanted to get to know the world in a way that just wasn’t possible from their home in Oregon, and credits successful communication by way of open conversations before the trip as the reason they were successful in their journey.
She says her favourite places were the ones that surprised her, such as Cambodia, Morocco and South East Asia (they weren’t necessarily on the initial list of destinations). The family would vote on what locations to go to.
“It’s such an amazing experience, as parents, to watch what happens to your kids as they become curious and learn to interact with people from other countries” (Jody)
“In the 9 months, not one person thought “I’m tired and I want to go home”” (John)
Jody says one of the biggest gifts from the trip was getting to watch Riley and Allison become best friends.
“When you start giving advice to kids, it’s all about your agenda, not theirs. I think we need to be better listeners and do a lot less talking”
TIME CAPSULE (30 Yrs)
“Enjoy the ride, be good to yourself and be good to everyone. Listen and love. There is no limit to the number of hugs you can get.” (John)
“When I first saw the both of them, I was in awe. I knew that they were going to do huge things, and my job was just to hopefully clear the path, so they could figure out what their superpowers are. I was thrilled to show them how leaping can bring them to awareness faster than anything…I am thrilled to be their mom.” (Jody)
